Major Boost for SPR Survival Research

SPR support for survival research is getting a major boost thanks to a very generous pledge by Professor Yew-Kwang Ng (黄有光), emeritus professor in the Department of Economics, Monash University, Australia. Professor Ng has pledged £2 million Pounds to the SPR with the bulk of the gift aimed at substantially increasing the funding available for survival research in perpetuity. One-quarter of the funds have already been received by the SPR with the rest to be paid from the Professor’s estate in due course.

Professor Ng is a distinguished academic who has held chairs and professorships at a number of universities in Australia, China Professor Ng and the USA and is the recipient of prestigious awards in Economics and Social Sciences, including the highest award (Distinguished Fellow) of the Economic Society of Australia [external link]. Until recently he was on the Advisory Board of the Global Priorities Institute at Oxford University, and he delivered the inaugural Atkinson Memorial Lecture at Oxford University in 2018.

Although primarily known for his work in economics, Professor Ng’s interests are wide-ranging, having published more than 30 books and more than 300 refereed journal papers in economics, biology, cosmology, mathematics, philosophy, psychology, and happiness studies. Recently he has added to this list with a book on survival, Do We Survive Our Biological Death?: A Rational Examination, (Eliva, 2024). [external link]

To acknowledge Professor Ng’s generosity and interest in survival research the SPR Council has renamed the fund that supports it to the Yew-Kwang Ng (黄有光) Fund for Survival Research. Dr. Cal Cooper, Chairman of the Survival Research Committee, which administers the research grants programme, has commented, “We are tremendously grateful to Professor Ng for giving us this unparalleled opportunity to attract and fund top quality survival research. Our committee is looking forward to ramping up the support we can offer, and I encourage researchers to check out the application information on this site.”
