When it comes to optimizing resources and results, experimental parapsychology has been dominated by two schools of thought: those who bet on the ‘elitist’ approach, focused on individuals with exceptional abilities; and those adhering to an ‘universalist’ approach, exploring psi with unselected subjects. Both paths have their merits and limitations. I would like to present a third, ‘middle path’ that we are exploring at the Institute Metapsychique. It focuses on selected cohorts – groups of individuals who are not necessarily 'gifted,' but who, in the light of predefined criteria, show promise for superior performance. The hope is that this 3rd way can bring together the best of two worlds, i.e. the promise of large effects, with the scalability of broadly-based participation in research. In the long run, this approach could yield more reliable and consistent findings than either of the traditional ones, while also rendering psychical research accessible to a larger range of scientists.
