For 15 years, transpersonal psychologist Steve Taylor has been researching cases of spontaneous spiritual awakening that occur in the midst of intense psychological turmoil. In times of bereavement, serious illness, addiction, deep depression, and intense stress a miraculous transformation sometimes occurs: the death of an old identity and the birth of a new, spiritually awakened self. In this presentation – based on his new book Extraordinary Awakenings – Steve provides some examples of these transformations from his research and explains the reasons why they occur, including factors such as the dissolution of psychological attachments, acknowledgment, and acceptance. Then he explains what we can learn from the phenomenon, with principles that we can apply to our own spiritual development.

Steve Taylor, PhD is a senior lecturer in psychology at Leeds Beckett University, and the author of several best-selling books on psychology and spirituality, including three books of spiritual poetry. He is past chair of the Transpersonal Psychology Section of the British Psychological Society. His books include Waking From Sleep, The Fall, The Leap, Spiritual Science and his new book Extraordinary Awakenings.
