Conference Notice

This year’s SPR conference is to be held in the city of Sheffield. Recently on the shortlist for UK City of Culture 2013, the city and the region have a lot to offer any visitor. Our chosen venue is The Endcliffe Village (just outside the city centre). We will be using the state-of-the-art Edge centre for our lectures and meals and comfortable accommodation will be provided at the Halifax hall.

Direct trains run to Sheffield from St. Pancras station in London as well as many other UK cities. The city is also served by “Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield Airport” (25 miles). If travelling by Rail, there is a large taxi rank at Sheffield station and the venue is a 15 minute drive from the station out of peak times. There is also a regular bus service which operates from the city centre – just hop on the number 40 or 120 bus (every 10 mins). The main city centre is just a 5-minute taxi ride away.

Sheffield’s history dates back to pre-Roman times. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in Sheffield for almost 14 years, spending her time between the castle, Manor Lodge and Chatsworth. Cutlery manufacturing began in Sheffield in the Middle Ages and Crucible Steel was invented here in the 1740s. Stainless Steel followed in 1913 and the city remains a centre of creativity and a leader in the science of metallography.

Sheffield particularly prides itself in its parks and gardens, evident in the Botanical Gardens which are to be found very near to our conference venue. There are a number of museums celebrating the region’s history and galleries displaying artworks by artists including Sisley and Turner as well as by modern artists such as Bridget Riley. The city centre is compact and has a sizeable shopping area, with a large number of bars, restaurants and theatres, etc.

We look forward to welcoming all delegates to Sheffield this year. Whether or not you have been to an SPR conference before, we will endeavour to ensure that you enjoy the conference itself as well as the local amenities.
